Beating the heat how to survive Summer in Texas: A woman’s guide. I want you ladies to thrive this summer and not melt like dark leather seats in the Texas sun.
I was born and raised in Texas. To a Texan, there is nothing better than a cookout and swim party in the summer. We wait for the summer, love it, and can’t wait to experience it.
Until it gets so hot your entire body feels like it’s slow roasting like a barbecue. At that point, we head inside our air conditioning and only come out in the early morning and late evening hours.
Now, if you’re not from Texas and lived somewhere that never got above 90, you’re in for a Texas treat in the summer.
It could get around 114 degrees by late July. I mean, it was 91 degrees outside today, and I was talking about how pleasant the weather is.
Basically, 91 degrees is like a spring breeze. Most Texans don’t break a sweat until after 95. Anything below 100 degrees becomes okay, but not above 100. That turns into the marker, and then it becomes “It’s just 105.”
But I am here to help you ladies survive the Texas summer. So here is the best information from someone born here and loves it, even when I feel like I am slow-roasting.
First and foremost, on how to survive the summer in Texas,
Stay hydrated
When I say stay hydrated, if you are outside in the heat, you need to drink water constantly. I prefer iced water in the summer because I believe it cools down the body temperature.
Here is an article about drinking hot and cold water from Healthline. https://www.healthline.com/health/is-drinking-cold-water-bad-for-you. It can cool you down internally.
Use hydration packets.
If you are someone who likes hydration packets, I use liquid IV. They have helped me stay hydrated and survive the summer in Texas. Anything that includes electrolytes can help to rehydrate you fast. It’s also recommended by many Dr.’s.
You also need to know that swimming in pools can dehydrate you because it’s so hot in Texas in the summer. The water can get quite hot, so you could be sweating and not realize it.
Signs of mild to moderate dehydration include:
- Thirst
- Dry or sticky mouth
- Not urinating much
- Darker yellow urine
- Dry, cool skin
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
Signs of severe dehydration include:
- Not urinating, or very dark yellow or amber-colored urine
- Dry, shriveled skin
- Irritability or confusion
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Rapid breathing
- Sunken eyes
- Listlessness
- Shock (not enough blood flow through the body)
- Unconsciousness or delirium
These are taken from the Mount Sinia Health Library. If you have severe dehydration, you need medical attention. If you are around kids it’s good to watch for these signs as well.
Back to the hydration packets, I keep some on me when traveling in case I need one or someone I am with needs one.

Plan for the heat
If you are from somewhere other than Texas, then you will need to learn how to plan around the heat.
There are certain times of the day we do indoor activities is from 2-6, which is generally the hottest part of the day. But if you are in the Sun, it will get hot from 12:00 PM.
There is only one exception. Barbecue. We will barbecue in all temperatures at all times of day.
The next on how to survive the summer in Texas: A woman’s guide.
Wear Sunscreen and keep it on you.
Now, my family has been in Texas for generations, but my skin is pale, British and Scottish descent. That means I turn red, freckle, and then, at some point, if my freckles meld together, I get tan.
So, Sunscreen is always a must.
But not just SPF 30. That’s for baby states and not for Texas. If you really want to protect yourself against sun damage, you need SPF 50.
Put it on in the morning before your coffee, and don’t go outside in the Sun without it. Our summers in Texas are hot, and the Sun blisters down on you.
You can get burned without Sunscreen or clothing with SPF in under an hour. My favorite Sunscreen for me and my family is Sunbum. It’s reef safe and safe to use on kids plus it doesn’t break out my sensitive skin. We have used this one for years.
Surviving the summer in Texas is something that many people forget about when they move here or visit.
Get the right sunglasses.
I have light blue eyes that are sensitive to the Sun.
But did you know that your eyes can burn?
If you are in lakes, pools, or the ocean, the reflection can really hurt your eyes, and you can get sunburned. So ensure you have good sunglasses with 100% protection against UVA and UVB radiation.
I prefer polarized sunglasses with UVA and UVB.
Please note that not all sunglasses have UVA and UVB protection.
One year, I splurched and got prescription sunglasses, but they didn’t have them, and my eyes got burned at a pool party. So check your prescription sunglasses to ensure your beautiful eyes are safe from the Texas Sun.
These sunglasses from Amazon have become my favorite this year.
Now you have good Sunscreen and sunglasses, and the next thing you need to survive the summer in Texas is
Wear a hat.
Most Texans have at least one hat for the summer or several, depending on the occasion.
Here are my personal hats, which are must-haves for summer.
- Baseball hat: on-the-go occasions while looking cute.
- Cowboy hat-straw with bendable rim: For the pool. They look cute, Texan, and stylish all in one.
- Famer Hat: Protection from the Sun and premature aging. Only practical and never for parties. It’s a wide brim so it shades my whole face.
I actually got this hat as a present at first, I was like “Oh, thank you.” Now, it’s one of my favorite things.
I would recommend at least one hat for the summer in Texas. Pick the one that suits you best and you feel beautiful in. Although, I am sure you look good in any hat.
The next on my Surviving the Summer in Texas is,
Cool clothing
In Texas, in the summer, linen should become your best friend. It’s the most breathable choice, and the good news is that it’s widely available at major retailers right now.
For my everyday work from home outfit,
Linen short and a tank top.
This is truely my basic wardrobe. Now for meetings I will wear a dress or cotton top with a flowy skirt.
What I regret wearing in the summer is anything with Polyester.
Wearing this in Summer in Texas can make you regret your life choices. I don’t care how cute it might be if it’s a polyester blend; sweat beads will start forming the moment you go outside.
Go with 100% cotton. It’s also good for the environment.
The next for surviving the Texas summer heat,
Ice packs and cooling towels
This is a must-have in a Texas family freezer. Cooling towels and reusable ice packs, we use them all the time. They can really help you cool off in the heat and any type of emergency.
It’s also great when you want to cool off fast. If you are going through any type of change, perimenipause, menipause, having hot flashes for any reason these are a must in Texas in the Summer, or just blazing hot from going outside.
Now if you are a woman that likes to wear make-up the heat in Texas will melt your make-up faster than chocolate in the sun. But here are a few my tips for Texas heat and make-up.
Powder in the Summer and waterproof mascara
Set your makeup.
I am a fan of the Korean glass skin glow. But glow is different than beads of sweat and make-up running down your face in the hottest part of the Summer.
So how to combat this is with powder.
There is one product that I really like in the Summer in Texas-Laura Gellar. Her powder foundation is great for Texas.
I do my serum, moisterizer, wait 5 mins and apply Sunscreen then I put on Laura Gellar “Baked Foundation Powder.”
I wear this foundation daily because it really helps my Sunscreen set on my face and stay put. It doesn’t set in lines and it doesn’t run down my face in the summer.
The next is waterproof mascara. Here is what happens when I don’t wear waterproof mascara.
I haven’t found one that I would really recommend yet. I have tried several this year and still haven’t found one that meets all my criteria to suggest to you.
For years I dyed my eyelashes which is great in the summer. So if you are not apprehensive about dying your lashes, it’s a great way to not need mascara in the summer. Just use an eyelash curler and your done.
The best thing I can recommend is to take good care of your skin. So if your make-up does melt off it wont matter because your skin is great.
The last thing I will suggest on how to survive the Summer in Texas is an essential most Texans.
Fans
If you have spent anytime in Texas you probably already know that fans are part of our decor. Ceiling fans, assulating fans, wearable fans.
Fans use less electricity than A/C units and can help cool down rooms in the Summer heat. They are cost efficient and bring airflow to the room. There are so many meme’s about fans and Texans and they are all true for a reason.
I hope this articles helps you survive the Summer in Texas. Let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations, I would love to try them.
