Here is what you need to know before going to Europe in 2025. The new requirements and the ones to watch for in the near future.
After 20 years of travel and living in 5 countries, I have learned a lot about traveling internationally. But this year, things have changed or are about to change by the end of 2025.
So, even if you’re an experienced traveler or a novice traveler. Here are new requirements you will need to meet when going to Europe in 2025.
If traveling to the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom is England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
Get your ETA-Electronic Travel Authorization.
Here is how you do that:
- Download the ET app from the App Store
- You need your Passport (the one you are traveling with)
- Email address
- Credit, debit, Google Pay, or Apple Pay
Processing will take at least three days, so don’t wait.
The ETA will be good for two years or until your Passport expires, whichever comes first.
You must keep the download app on your phone for the duration of your ETA. If you have to re-download the app, the process starts over again, and you must reapply.
What you will need to watch for your travel in Europe in 2025
European Union Travel
Keep up to date on new regulations for going to Europe.
The EU is comprised of these countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
The EU is going to start requiring a similar authorization as the UK.
It will be called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
This is expected in Spring or Summer, so check your requirements before traveling.
Entry and Exit System of EU (EES)
In addition to the ETIAS, they will implement a entry and exit system. This automated IT system will record biomatrix, addresses, and coming and going throughout Europe.
This will get rid of passport stamps. I know I am sad about this too. But they are trying to streamline the process and cut back on Identity theft.
From the website:
“For the purpose of the EES, ‘non-EU national’ means a traveler not holding the nationality of any European Union country or the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
‘Short stay’ means up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This period is calculated as a single period for all the European countries using the EES.”
Anyone from the United States will need both of these to travel throughout Europe. The EES will be a form of border crossing recording while you travel in Europe for non-EU citizens.
Passport Renewal Online for US Citizens
Now your Passport can be renewed online. Here is a link to how to renew your Passport online.
The whole process can be done online if your Passport has expired within the last 5 years or is still valid.
These changes haven’t been implemented yet but are slated to be in the coming months.
They will probably try to implement them for peak travel season to Europe, in the spring and summer.
So, if you are traveling to Europe for fun or leading a Mission team, stay up to date on requirements.
